The steepest, shortest and most challenging path up Kilimanjaro — for experienced trekkers only.
The Umbwe Route is Kilimanjaro's most dramatic and technical trekking path. It climbs directly up the south face of Kibo through steep forested ridges, with very little of the gentle gradient that defines other routes. The reward: a quieter trail, spectacular views, and a true sense of adventure.
This is not a beginner's route. Because of the rapid altitude gain, the Umbwe has one of the lowest summit success rates on the mountain. We strongly recommend it only for trekkers with previous high-altitude experience and a high level of fitness.
Short drive (30 min) from Moshi to Umbwe Gate. After registration, begin the climb — almost immediately steep — up a forested ridge with twisting tree roots and dripping moss. A demanding first day with serious altitude gain.
The route narrows along a knife-edge ridge with dramatic views of the southern ice fields and the Western Breach. After climbing through heath and moorland, descend to the spectacular Barranco Valley with its giant senecio trees.
Tackle the famous Barranco Wall — a non-technical but exhilarating scramble — then a series of valleys to Karanga. A shorter day designed for much-needed acclimatisation.
Steady climb across alpine desert to Barafu, the high camp. Early dinner and rest — woken before midnight for the summit push.
Midnight ascent past Stella Point to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After photos, descend all the way to Mweka Camp.
Easy descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi.
From $1,801 per person — for experienced high-altitude trekkers.
