The shortest and most affordable Kilimanjaro climb — the classic "Coca-Cola Route" with dormitory huts.
The 5-day Marangu is the shortest path to Uhuru Peak and Kilimanjaro's most budget-friendly option. It is also the only route on the mountain with permanent dormitory huts — bunks and mattresses replace tents — making it popular in the rainy season.
Be aware: without an acclimatisation day, the 5-day Marangu has the lowest summit success rate of any Kili itinerary. We recommend the 6-day version if budget allows. If you are experienced at altitude and time-constrained, this is the climb for you.
Transfer from Moshi to Marangu Gate (1 hour). Register, then climb gently through dense montane rainforest with colobus monkeys. Reach Mandara Hut — a cluster of A-frame huts — by afternoon. Optional 30-min walk to Maundi Crater viewpoint.
Leave the rainforest and climb into heath and moorland with giant lobelias and groundsels. Stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks on clear days. Arrive Horombo by mid-afternoon.
Cross "The Saddle" — a stark, lunar alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. Early dinner at Kibo Hut and lights out by 7pm. You will be woken just before midnight for the summit push.
Midnight ascent up the steep scree to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then along to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. Long descent all the way back down to Horombo for a well-earned rest.
Final descent through moorland and rainforest to the gate. Collect your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi by lunchtime.
From $1,510 per person — Kilimanjaro's most affordable summit attempt.
