8-Day Lemosho Route

The most scenic route on the mountain — quieter trails, world-class acclimatisation and the highest summit success rate.

Lemosho Route — 8 Days

The Lemosho Route is widely considered the most beautiful path up Kilimanjaro. It starts on the remote western side of the mountain, traversing pristine rainforest and the spectacular Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit at Lava Tower.

Our 8-day Lemosho gives you two full acclimatisation days, dramatically improving your chances of summiting. It's the premium choice for trekkers who want the best mix of scenery, success rate and a less crowded experience — particularly during the high season.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m)

Drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate (about 4 hours) on the remote western side of the mountain. After registration, a short drive to the trailhead, then a gentle 3-hour trek through pristine rainforest to Mti Mkubwa ("Big Tree") Camp.

6 km / 3–4 hrs Lunch, Dinner
Day 2

Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1 Camp (3,505m)

Climb out of the rainforest onto moorland and cross the western edge of the Shira Plateau — a high-altitude caldera with sweeping views of Kibo's western face. Camp on the plateau under exceptionally dark skies.

8 km / 5–6 hrs Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3

Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp (3,810m)

An easy walk eastward across the plateau with stunning views, gaining altitude gradually. Reach Shira 2 by lunchtime — the afternoon is an acclimatisation walk towards the Cathedral.

11 km / 4–5 hrs Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4

Shira 2 → Lava Tower (4,640m) → Barranco Camp (3,960m)

The "climb high, sleep low" day. Ascend gradually to Lava Tower for lunch, then descend into the dramatic Barranco Valley with its alien-looking giant senecio trees.

10 km / 6–7 hrs Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5

Barranco → Karanga Camp (3,995m)

The famous Barranco Wall scramble in the morning — non-technical but exhilarating — then a series of valleys to Karanga. A short day designed for acclimatisation.

5 km / 4–5 hrs Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6

Karanga → Barafu Camp (4,673m)

A steady climb across alpine desert to the high camp at Barafu. Early dinner and rest — you will be woken before midnight for the summit attempt.

4 km / 4–5 hrs Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 7

Summit Day: Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Midnight start for the steep ascent past Stella Point to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. Celebrate on the Roof of Africa, then descend all the way to Mweka Camp.

16 km / 12–14 hrs Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 8

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

An easy descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi for hot showers and celebration.

10 km / 3–4 hrs Breakfast, Lunch
